Why a phone speaker sounds muffled

A phone plays sound through a small grille. A dust mesh sits behind it. Six causes are common. The quiz above points to the most likely one. Use this list as a quick overview.

1. Water or moisture

Apple says water in the speaker port might degrade speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates. Samsung says speaker vibration during calls can remove moisture from the mesh. Leave the phone in a dry place with airflow. Follow the wet phone checklist.

2. Dust, lint and debris

Debris in the grille makes the sound quiet and muffled. Apple says to use a small, non-metallic, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry. Apple says not to use compressed air. Xiaomi says liquid can block the dust mesh. Do not press or rub hard. Read the dust cleaning steps.

3. A case or screen protector

General advice: a case or a screen film can cover the grille or the earpiece. Take it off. Then listen again.

4. Bluetooth and audio routing

General advice: with Bluetooth on, the audio may play on a headset or speaker nearby. The phone speaker then seems quiet. Turn Bluetooth off.

5. Software and volume settings

General advice: check the media volume, silent mode and Do Not Disturb. Check the settings inside the app. Restart the phone. Install a software update if one is waiting.

6. A hardware fault

A drop can damage the speaker. If the sound is distorted on every test, and on headphones too, a repair is the most likely fix. A technician can check the phone. See the repair options in the results below.

Tip: test the sound in two apps. If only one app is muffled, the phone speaker is probably fine.

To compare the audio before and after a fix, run the speaker check.

Common causes of a muffled phone speaker

The quiz uses these results. You can read them all here.

Wet phone that still works

Most likely: Most likely water sits in the speaker grille or the port. Apple says water in the speaker port might degrade speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates.

  1. Take off the case. Wipe the outside with a soft dry cloth. Do not press liquid into openings.
  2. Tap the phone gently against your hand with the connector facing down.
  3. Run the water eject tone. Put the phone speaker side down on a cloth. Keep it away from your ear.
  4. Leave the phone in a dry place with airflow. A fan with cool air is fine. Do not use heat, compressed air or rice.
  5. Wait at least 5 hours before you charge with a cable. This is Apple's rule for a wet iPhone. Apple's liquid-alert page allows a first try after 30 minutes if no alert shows. Waiting longer is safer. Wireless charging is fine once the back is dry.

Wet phone that is off

Most likely: Most likely water is inside the phone. Power on or charging can cause damage.

  1. Keep the phone off. Do not plug in a cable.
  2. Take off the case. Wipe the outside with a soft dry cloth.
  3. Do not run the water eject tone. The tone needs a phone that is on.
  4. Dry the phone in airflow at room temperature for a day. Do not use heat, compressed air or rice.
  5. If the phone stays off, or if it was in salt water, soap or a sugary drink, contact the maker or a repair shop. General advice: if the liquid was not fresh water, seek service.

Sudden silence: check the settings

Most likely: Most likely a setting is on that mutes the sound.

  1. Turn the volume up with the side buttons. Check the media volume, not only the ring volume.
  2. Check the silent switch or silent mode.
  3. Turn off Do Not Disturb or focus modes.
  4. Turn off Bluetooth. The sound may play on a headset or speaker nearby.
  5. Restart the phone. Then run the speaker check.

No sound after the settings check

Most likely: Most likely the speaker grille is blocked, or the speaker has a fault. Water can also cause this.

  1. Run the speaker check. Note if you hear any sound.
  2. If the phone got wet lately, use the wet phone path in this quiz.
  3. Look at the grille. Clean dust gently with a small, dry, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush. Do not use compressed air.
  4. Restart the phone. Test again.
  5. If there is still no sound, see the repair options below.

Muffled in calls only

Most likely: Most likely the earpiece grille is partly blocked by dust or liquid.

  1. Remove the case and any screen film that covers the earpiece.
  2. Wipe the earpiece area without pressing. Xiaomi says liquid blocks the earpiece dust mesh.
  3. Clean dust gently with a small, dry, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush. Do not use compressed air.
  4. Let the phone dry in a ventilated place if it was wet. Samsung says normal use during calls can remove moisture from the speaker mesh.
  5. A web page cannot test the earpiece. Make a normal call at low volume to check it. Keep the earpiece away from your ear while you test.

Muffled after getting wet

Most likely: Most likely moisture sits on the speaker mesh. It often clears as the phone dries.

  1. Wipe the outside with a soft dry cloth.
  2. Run the water eject tone with the speaker side down. Keep the phone away from your ear.
  3. Leave the phone in a dry place with airflow. Do not use heat, compressed air or rice.
  4. Use the phone normally. Samsung says speaker vibration during calls can remove moisture from the mesh.
  5. If the sound is still muffled after a day, see the repair options below.

Muffled everywhere, not wet

Most likely: Most likely dust or debris blocks the speaker grille.

  1. Remove the case.
  2. Brush the grille gently with a small, dry, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush. Apple recommends this for debris. Do not use compressed air.
  3. A sound or tone does not remove dust. Use the brush.
  4. Run the speaker check to compare the sound.
  5. If the sound stays muffled, see the repair options below.

One side quieter on a stereo phone

Most likely: Most likely the grille on the quieter side is partly blocked. Some phones also play less sound on one speaker.

  1. Run the speaker check. Use the left and right test in landscape. It is experimental. The phone decides which speaker plays each channel.
  2. Find the quieter grille. Brush it gently with a small, dry, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush. Do not use compressed air.
  3. Run the test again to compare.
  4. If one side stays quiet, see the repair options below.

Quieter sound on a one-speaker phone

Most likely: Most likely the single speaker grille is partly blocked. A phone with one speaker plays all sound from one place.

  1. Remove the case. Check that your finger or the case does not cover the grille.
  2. Brush the grille gently with a small, dry, soft-bristled, non-metallic brush. Do not use compressed air.
  3. Run the speaker check to compare the sound.
  4. If the sound stays quiet, see the repair options below.

Crackling after water

Most likely: Most likely moisture is still in the speaker. Apple says water might degrade speaker performance until it completely evaporates.

  1. Lower the volume.
  2. Run the water eject tone with the speaker side down. Keep the phone away from your ear.
  3. Leave the phone in a dry place with airflow for up to a day. Do not use heat, compressed air or rice.
  4. Wait at least 5 hours before you charge with a cable. This is Apple's rule for a wet iPhone. Apple says charging a wet connector can corrode the pins. Android makers give no single wait time. Google says to let the phone dry at room temperature. Samsung says to dry it and avoid heat.
  5. If the crackle stays after a day, see the repair options below.

Open the water eject tone · Apple: About splash, water and dust resistance of iPhone, Apple: If you see a liquid-detection alert on your iPhone

Crackling or buzzing, not from water

Most likely: Most likely the speaker or a part near it has a hardware fault. A drop can cause this.

  1. Lower the volume while you wait for service.
  2. Test the sound in two apps. Test it with headphones. This shows if the fault stays in the phone speaker.
  3. Run the speaker check. Note which tones crackle.
  4. Restart the phone.
  5. If the crackle stays, a repair is the most likely fix. See the repair options below.

Open the speaker check

Sound problem in one app only

Most likely: Most likely the app has a setting, a permission or a bug. The phone speaker itself is probably fine.

  1. Check the volume and mute settings inside the app.
  2. Close the app and open it again. Then restart the phone.
  3. Update the app.
  4. Run the speaker check. If it sounds clear, the speaker works.
  5. If the problem stays, contact the app maker.
